Restored and protected
Location: Mairangi Bay, Auckland
This project involved the restoration of a rusty iron roof at a Mairangi Bay residence. Given the substantial cost of reroofing and the corrosive effects of the coastal environment on iron roofs, the most practical and economical solution was to restore and protect the existing roof with a durable coating. This approach aimed to extend the roof’s lifespan, prevent further deterioration, and mitigate the challenges posed by the salty air and humidity near the ocean.
Gilsonite bituminous aluminium roof paint was used, because it is a highly recommended product for rusty iron roofs, especially those with a low pitch where roof ponding is a concern. This type of paint offers excellent resistance to rust, corrosion, and weathering, making it ideal for protecting metal roofs in harsh environments.

The project involved the following steps:
- Surface Preparation: The roof was thoroughly pressure cleaned to remove dirt, debris, and loose rust particles, preparing the surface for the coating application.
- Rust Treatment: Two coats of rust converter were applied to all rust-affected areas to neutralize the rust and provide a suitable base for the subsequent coatings.
- Primer Application: A coat of solvent-based iron primer was applied to the entire roof to enhance adhesion and provide a uniform base for the topcoat.
- Protective Coating: Two coats of Gilsonite bituminous aluminium roof paint were applied to the roof, providing a durable and protective barrier against rust, corrosion, and weathering.
Project Outcome:
Upon completion of the project, the client’s rusty iron roof was effectively restored and protected against the coastal elements. The new coating will significantly extend the roof’s lifespan and improve its overall performance. The client can now enjoy a safe and durable roof for many years to come.
